The 80's sound

Ah, the 80’s. The “Me”decade. A time of big hair, dance clubs, and brightly colored shirts. The decade responsible for the majority of the development of my personality. In 1980 I was still in grade school and by the end of the decade I was in college. So there was a pretty fair chunk of my development in that era.
The 80’s officially began with the election of Ronald Reagan and really didn’t end until 1992 with the beginning of the Clinton administration. In those years there was a tremendous amount of change and upheaval in the economy and mentality of the people, and a lot of it is reflected in the music.

Parents gone mad

Two news items grabbed my attention this past week. The first involved a father suing a youth hockey league after his son was not chosen the most valuable player of the league. The second concerns two mothers upset after their daughters had been cut from a cheerleading squad. The kicker? The girls are just 7 years old.

Captain irrelevance

In my younger days, I was known as a trivia master. The amount of useless facts floating around in my head was legendary. I was highly sought after for Trivial Pursuit games…and little else. My skills got to be so well renowned I was given a title… “Captain Irrelevance!”

Collectormania

When I was a kid I loved collecting baseball cards. In the 70’2 and early 80’s it was pretty straightforward: you could only buy one brand – Topps, and every card was available just by buying a few packs in my local grocery store.
