Largely ignoring a struggling economy, McCreary Countians dug deep in their wallets last weekend to help raise over $46,000 for the battle to fight cancer.
The 12th annual McCreary County Relay for Life brought hundreds of people to the McCreary Central track to participate in the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event.
Prior to the first lap of the evening, a special ceremony was held to honor the cancer survivors in attendance. As each survivor was named they were presented with a medallion to commemorate their successful fight.

The survivors led the traditional first lap around the track to cheers and applause before being joined by their caregivers and opening the track to all walkers.
As the sun went down the track was lit by soft candlelight for the Luminaria Ceremony, remembering those who have passed and honoring the survivors.

Sula’s Crusaders raised $5,037.03 to lead all teams in fundraising efforts and were presented the Family Team award. Friends 4 Life placed second with $2,484 raised and also won the award for Best Campsite. The Taylor 2 team placed third with $1,431 raised.
The Bank of McCreary County ($3,089.78) led all business teams with the McCreary County Water District ($2,661.36) and Outdoor Venture ($2,295) finishing second and third respectively. OVC also won the Team Spirit award.
The McCreary County Health Department ($3,600) placed first out of the medical teams. Winchester Patton and Burgess ($2,540.47) placed second and Southfork Medical ($1,295.90) placed third.
Pine Knot Primary was also honored for their fundraising efforts, raising $2,239.35 and given a special sign to commemorate their efforts.
Julie Sumner, the American Cancer Society Community Representative thanked everyone for their help and participation during the event.
