A McCreary County man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after a Thursday night incident where gunshots were exchanged. According to McCreary County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris King, authorities were alerted to the shooting after McCreary County 911 received a call around 9:30 p.m. from George “Junior” Grundy at 104 Grundy Road. Grundy stated that a man, identified as Jamie West, came to his residence and fired at least two shots at him, missing both times. Grundy said he returned fire with a shotgun loaded with bird shot pellets and believed he had struck West at least once.
Grundy stated that West fled the scene and authorities began a search for the black Chevy Silverado Pickup truck West was reportedly driving.
About 45 minutes later 911 Dispatch received a call from a resident on Mine 18 Road about an unknown age male who had been in an accident and was complaining of being shot. West had apparently blown a tire on his vehicle during his run from the law and residents provided first aid until authorities arrived.
Authorities arrived on the scene to find West suffering from several small shotgun pellet wounds to his face and left arm.
Deputy King stated that West denied instigating the shooting, claiming Grundy fired unprovoked at his vehicle as he drove past, but a search of his vehicle turned up a small .22 caliber handgun covered with blood and spent shell casings.
After returning to the Grundy residence, Deputy King located and recovered two .22 caliber slugs from the side of the house.
West was taken to Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital to be treated for his injuries before being released to authorities and was promptly arrested on an attempted murder charge as well as DUI and Operating on an expired operators license. He is being lodged in the McCreary County Detention Center.
Deputies Mike Norwood and Chris West. KSP Trooper Craig Reed and Constables Donald Daugherty and David Kilby assisted at the scene. No charges have been pressed against Grundy.
Deputy King said the apparent motivation for the attempted shooting revolved around a domestic dispute involving the two men and Grundy’s wife.
