After wandering in the woods for more than 24 hours, a missing McCreary County man was found safe and sound by rescuers less than two miles from his home.
Shortly after 2:00 p.m. Monday afternoon search and rescue teams spotted Terry Dewayne Hammock in the woods near Reservoir Road and tracked him by his footprints, finally catching up to him about 1/2 mile down the road.
Other than being a little dehydrated and suffering from several cuts and scratches, Hammock was in good health after being found. He was taken to a nearby medical facility for evaluation after being reunited with his family.
Members of the McCreary County Search and Rescue combed hundreds of acres in the Daniel Boone National Forest in a search for the missing man Sunday night and throughout the day Monday.
Terry Dwight Hammock was reported missing Sunday night and authorities issued a golden alert due to Hammock’s mental disability.
McCreary County Sheriff Gus Skinner said Monday that Hammock apparently had gotten into a fight with his aunt and left his bedroom though a window and ran off into the woods around 9:00 a.m. Sunday morning. It was more than 12 hours later before his relatives reported him missing and a search began.
Search and Rescue set up a command post in the parking lot of the Word of God Church around 9:30 p.m. and began scouring the woods behind the B & C Townhouse apartments on Pig Skin Road for the subject.
The search was postponed around 3:00 a.m. and resumed later that morning. Crews from the Pulaski County and Wayne County Search and Rescue assisted with the search, as well as search dogs from the Department of Corrections out of Lexington and Bell County.
This is not the first time a search crew has been called to look for Hammock. Just over a month ago, on April 28, the McCreary County Search and Rescue Squad located the young man in the woods behind the apartment complex where he lives about an hour after being notified of his disappearance.
