Agents from the Lake Cumberland Area Drug Task Force, along with officers from several county and state agencies wrapped up a year long undercover drug investigation with 28 arrests Friday in “Operation Spring Cleanup Two.” The McCreary County Grand Jury returned sealed indictments covering more than 60 felony counts against 34 suspects last week, and on Friday 28 of those named in the indictments were arrested as part of the sting operation.
Supervisory Agent Robbie Clark worked as the lead agent on most of the cases, working the investigations for over a year before gathering enough evidence to present the cases to the Grand Jury and seeking indictments. Staging out of the Whitley City Fire Department, the officers met Friday morning to divide into five teams and familiarize themselves with the suspects. The teams rolled out shortly after 9:00 a.m. in hopes of catching the majority of the suspects at home. As the teams fanned out over the county and made arrests, the suspects were read their rights and taken back to the staging area where agents processed the suspects before transporting them to the McCreary County Detention Center. The operation had one unexpected result with the arrest of a suspect who was in the wrong place at the right time. According to LCADTF Director David Gilbert, 27-year old Andrea Henderson of Somerset, was allegedly attempting to deliver OxyContin pills from Michigan to a suspected dealer when officers arrived at the residence. Henderson was arrested and charged with Trafficking in a Controlled Substance First Degree and taken into custody. Gilbert stated that the majority of illegal pain pills are making their way to McCreary County through drug dealers in Michigan and Florida pain clinics, where doctors readily prescribe narcotics through only a cursory examination. “This is a great example of multiple departments working together,” McCreary County Sheriff Gus Skinner said Friday. “Hopefully people will understand that, sometimes investigations can take a while before the results are seen by the public,” Sheriff Skinner said. “We encourage people to report any suspicious activities they may see. You may not see us make an arrest right away, but we do investigate these cases.” In addition to the arrests, agents seized $4,000 in cash, 22 OxyContin 80 mg. tablets, 30 Xanax tablets and a 2002 Hyundai passenger vehicle. The LCADTF initiated a similar bust in 2007. In the first Operation Spring Cleanup 34 people were arrested and charged with drug-related crimes. Officers from the McCreary County Sheriff’s Office, Kentucky State Police, Appalachia High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas Investigative Support Center, U.S. Forest Service, Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department, Kentucky Army National Guard and agents from the Lake Cumberland Area Drug Task Force participated in the operation. The LCADTF is made up of local, state and federal officers and is funded by AHIDTA, the Kentucky Justice Cabinet and through local government matches. The McCreary County Fiscal Court contributes $6,000 every year to the agency. Operation Spring Cleanup II arrests: Operation Spring Cleanup II Arrests
