Officials at U.S.P. McCreary in Pine Knot are confirming that two more inmates have been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus, commonly known as swine flu, bringing the total number of cases to eight in that facility. According to a statement released Monday, the inmates are no longer symptomatic, but the entire facility has been placed under lock down and visiting suspended as a precautionary measure. Last week, when the first cases appeared, the prison had placed the housing unit where the inmates were living under quarantine, but the remainder of the institution maintained regular operations. Medical staff are monitoring the inmate population and advising inmates to report any influenza symptoms. Last week U.S.P. McCreary Executive Assistant Fernando Messer stated no staff members have been diagnosed with the virus and there was little risk of it spreading outside the facility. “I want to stress that there is no risk to the general public,” Messer said. “There is no danger to the staff, public, or the inmate population.”
The prison is expected to remain under lock down status until next Wednesday. |
