A Parkers Lake man is making another run for the District 1 Magistrate’s seat. A Parkers Lake man is making another run for the District 1 Magistrate’s seat.
William “Mike” Jones recently declared his intent to seek election to the position with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance.
“My main purpose in running is I would like to work to improve the county,” Jones said this week, noting a lot of the issues that confronted the county prior to the 2006 election still persist. “Having magistrates that will work together toward the same goals can make the county better. I will work hard for the people of this county.”
Jones, a Republican, sought election to the post in the 2006 countywide election. Jones finished the race with 195 votes, and along with two others, saw Nathan Nevels win the nomination. Nevels lost the race to Democrat Teddy Coffey.
Jones is the second Republican to file early in the race, alongside Earl Brooks. Donald Wayne Perry, who also ran in 2006, has voiced publicly his intent to again seek the office. Derek Jones has come out early in the race on the Democrat ticket offering a challenge to Coffey.
Mike Jones says he may be just one voice, but he “knows I can make it heard.” Bettering the local economy through job growth is the number one issue the county faces he says.
“I feel the county has budgetary issues; we can do more to save money and spend wisely; tourism development needs our focus, but in general, the big concern for our people is jobs,” he says. Jones said little improvement has been made regarding economic development between 2006 and this election season.
“I have kids, like so many other citizens, that I would like to see stay here and be able to make a living. That is the reason we need job growth and a focus on programs that would enable our children to do that.”
Jones said he has experience in developing civic programs geared toward the populous, like Repair Affair and Extreme Build, on top of experience managing budgets, he feels will assist him in being effective as Magistrate.
“I will make every effort I can to improve this county, work for the people and work together with the other magistrates to make the county better,” Jones says.
The official filing date for a candidate to have their name placed on the ballot for the 2010 Primary Election is November 4. The May Primary will be held on May 18. In addition to all county offices being on the ballot, a number of state offices will be as well.
