Ken Upchurch, 52nd District State Representative, has announced his intent to seek election to the office of Judge-Executive in Wayne County. Ken Upchurch, 52nd District State Representative, has announced his intent to seek election to the office of Judge-Executive in Wayne County.
Upchurch made the announcement last week, just a few short weeks after he said he would not be seeking another term in the State House. When stating he would not run again for State Representative, a position he held for 10 years, Upchurch said, “the time has come to begin a new chapter of service.”
In announcing his bid for Judge-Executive, Upchurch, of Monticello, said his service in the Kentucky House of Representatives provided him with the “experience and the knowledge needed to guide Wayne County.”
“As a veteran of the General Assembly’s Local Government Committee, I had a hand in shaping legislation that would benefit our community and citizens as well as future generations of Kentuckians who will call our county home,” Upchurch said. “As I look around, I see issues in need of resolution and areas for improvement. I believe we can make Wayne County a better place to live, work and raise a family.”
Upchurch has filed his intent to run for the office with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance, which allows candidates the opportunity to raise and expend funds while campaigning ahead of the November 4 filing date. Upchurch is a Republican.
Since announcing he would not seek re-election as State Representative, one candidate has stepped forward for that position. Sara Beth Gregory, a Monticello attorney, announced she would be campaigning for election to that post. Gregory, a Republican, announced her candidacy on October 5, following Upchurch’s move out of the race.
Upchurch held that seat, which serves Wayne, McCreary and a portion of Pulaski County, since 1998.
To date, no other candidates have stepped forward from the area in the race for the House seat. Upchurch is the first candidate to step forward this election cycle in the race for Wayne County Judge-Executive. Greg Rankin currently serves as Wayne County Judge-Executive.
