McCreary County’s 10,305 registered voters are just days away from heading to the polls to narrow the field in the 2010 countywide election. Polls will open at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 18 at the county’s 18 voting precincts. 88 local candidates will have their names on the ballot denoting an election cycle that could draw large numbers of voters. Absentee voting has been underway for two weeks with 139 voters already voting at the courthouse. A total of 211 voters requested mail-in absentee ballots. Only 166 total absentee votes were cast in the 2006 countywide election. “I just feel like there will be a big turnout,” County Clerk Eric Haynes said last week. He said this week that one last election training will be held on Friday and then the Election Board and poll workers would be ready for Tuesday. In addition to the local races featured on Tuesday’s ballot, a number of important state and federal races will be on the ballot as well. In first looking at the state races, current State Senate President from the 16th District, David L. Williams is facing Republican primary opposition from Denver D. Capps of Burkesville. (Sara Beth Gregory of Monticello has all but sowed up the 52nd Kentucky House seat. With no opposition, Gregory will only appear on the General Election ballot.) In federal races, three Democrats are vying for a fall run-off against Republican Congressman Hal Rogers. David Prince of Louisa, Jim Holbert of London and Kenneth Stepp of Manchester are in a three-way race for their party’s nomination. The marquee battle this election season is taking place on both sides of the party isle in the race for U.S. Senator. Democrats Jack Conway and Daniel Mongiardo have attempted to steal the spotlight in the race, but still must contend with three other candidates including Whitley City’s own Darlene Price, the only woman and veteran in the race. Maurice M. Sweeny of Louisville and James Buckmaster of Henderson are also on the Democrat ballot. Five Republicans are fighting for their party’s nomination and a chance to fill the Senate seat being vacated by Jim Bunning. Rand Paul is the momentary poll leader in the race gaining momentum from Tea Party backers who rally around his cries for less debt and a smaller government (Paul was to attend Saturday’s rally in Whitley City, but a scheduling conflict will prevent his attendance). Trey Grayson, Kentucky Secretary of State, will be in Whitley City this evening at 7 p.m. (at Forcht Bank) making the stop as part of his 5th District Bus Tour. Congressman Rogers, who along with Senator Mitch McConnell has endorsed Grayson, is expected to appear as well. As Grayson and Paul battle for the lead in early polling, Jon Scribner of Gray, John Stephenson of Ft. Mitchell and Gurley Martin of Owensboro are also looking for their spot in Tuesday’s final tally. For information on the countywide races, please turn to our Voter’s Guide in Section C.
